Before creating your first quiz, letโ€™s get familiar with how product attributes work. We provide you with a variety of options that help you to release your creativity and save precious time.

1. Questions

To make a question, go to Quiz Maker โ†’ Questions, then click on the Add New button.

1.1 General

Give basic features to your question.

1.1.1 Question: Provide the question in the given field and make use of the various designs and font styles of the editor. By hitting the Add Image button, you attach an image directly to the question. With the help of the Add Media button, you insert an image or any other media into your question.

1.1.2 Question type: Choose the type of your question from this range:

  • Radio โ€” a multiple-choice question type with one correct answer. You can reorder the answers and add Images (Pro) to each of them. You can delete any answer and add a new one. Add Weights (Pro) to answers necessarily.
  • Checkbox (Multiple) โ€”  a multiple-choice question type with one or more correct answers. You can change the order of answers and add Images (Pro) to each of them. You can delete any answer and replace it with a new one. Provide Weights (Pro) to answers necessarily.
  • Dropdown โ€” a multiple-choice question type with one correct answer, which allows quiz takers to choose one answer choice from a list of choices presented in a dropdown menu. Similar to the last two types, you can reorder questions, delete them and add new ones, and add Images (Pro) as well. Provide Weights (Pro) to answers if necessary.
  • Text โ€” a type of question that requires the user to type the answer.
  • Short Text โ€” a type of question that needs to be answered with a short answer.
  • Number โ€” a type of question to which the user can answer by typing a number.
  • Date โ€” the user should answer this type of question by entering a date.
  • Custom (Banner) (Pro) โ€” this is an additional question that has the function of informing the user. Naturally, you can't add answers to this type of question. You cannot add weight to the question either. You need to give a title to your Custom question so that it can be distinguished from the variety of questions on the Questions page. For example, you can insert Banners between categories and write an introduction about them before they appear.
  • True/False โ€” the user should choose between true or false.
  • Fill in the Blank โ€” the user must fill in the blank space with the right answer. For using the "Fill in the blanks" question type, you will need to write the answer in the answers field and then add the convenient slug ( e.g. {blank_1} ) in the question. Add the slung in the place where the given answer should be written.
  • Matching โ€” the user should connect related items in the sentence.

Please check out the following quiz. It includes all the types of the questions.

To find out how the keyword functionality (Pro) works, please check out the following article: How To Make a Personality Quiz on WordPress

1.1.3 Answers: Add answers to your question. In order to insert possible correct answers, use the delimiter %%%. For instance: US%%%USA%%%United States. This operates only for the Text, Short Text, and Number question types. These three types also allow the Placeholder attribute, which is a short hint describing the expected answer.

  • Use HTML for answers: Allow implementing HTML coding in answer boxes. This works only for Radio, True/False, and Checkbox (Multiple) questions.

1.1.4 Question weight (Pro): Provide weight to the question by entering a numeric value in the box. Note that it is not connected with answer weights. But if you choose the By weight/points option (Results Settings โ†’ Calculate the score), the score will be calculated by multiplying the question weight by the answer weight.

1.1.5 Question category: Choose your preferred category for the question. If you cannot find the relevant category from the dropdown, go to Quiz Maker โ†’ Question Categories, then hit the Add New button. Give a title to it and Save and close. At last, come back to the Questions page and select the category you just created.

1.1.6 Question tags (Pro): You can choose your desired category prepared in advance.

1.1.7 Question status: Specify whether the question is Published or Unpublished. If you choose the latter one, your question won't be displayed anywhere on your website(You don't need to remove it from quizzes).

1.1.8 No influence to score: If you activate this option, the given question will not be included in the calculation of the final score. This means it will serve as a survey question.

1.1.9 Question title (Pro): Here you can type the title of the question.

While using some question types you will have additional options.

1.1.10 Hide question text on the front-end: Option allows to make the question appear without text. It is designed to use when the question includes an image as well.

If you have chosen Checkbox (Multiple) as a question type you would have two additional options.

1.1.11 Enable maximum selection number: Allow users to choose more than one answer but not over the maximum value you provided. It will work with the Checkbox type.

1.1.12 Enable minimum selection number: Require users to choose answers, not under the minimum value you provided. It will work with the Checkbox type.

If you have chosen Text/Short text as a question type you would have two additional options.

1.1.13 Maximum length of a text field: Restrict the number of characters/words to be inserted in the text field by the user.

1.1.14 Enable case sensitive text: When this option is enabled, the userโ€™s answer should be written in the particular form. For example, if the right answer is โ€œtrueโ€, the โ€œTRUEโ€™โ€™ will be counted as a wrong one.

When you choose Number as a question type you will see these three options in your settings.

1.1.15 Maximum value of a number field: Give a maximum legal value to your number field. For example, if you give a 20 value to the field, then the user will be able to answer the question by writing a value less than or equal to 20.

1.1.16 Minimum value of a number field: Give a minimum legal value to your number field. For example, if you give a 20 value to the field, then the user will be able to answer the question by writing a value more than or equal to 20.

1.1.17 Show error message: When the option is enabled; on the Number Question Type if in the answer box is typed something else besides the numbers. The โ€œError textโ€ message will appear.

Advanced settings: Head to the additional settings of the question by clicking on this button.

1.2 Settings

Some additional settings would be of help to you.

1.2.1 Question background image (Pro): Add a background image to your question. You can choose different images for different questions.

1.2.2 User answer explanation (Pro): This option lets the user explain why they have chosen that particular answer to the question.

  • Enabled
  • Disabled

1.2.3 Question hint: Add extra information so that it can help the user answer to the question. You can hint at the answer by adding an image or any other media as well.

1.2.4 Question explanation: Provide a descriptive or informative text about the question. You can specify where the explanation should be seen by heading to Settings โ†’ Show questions explanation โ†’ Show question explanation.

1.2.5 Message for the wrong answer: Type in a message which will be shown in case the user provides a wrong answer to the question. This option won't work if you have chosen By weight/points as a way of score calculation (Results Settings โ†’ Calculate the score). This option works for all question types except for the Checkbox and Custom (Banner) types.

1.2.6 Message for the right answer: Type in a message which will be shown if the user answers the question correctly. This option won't work if you have chosen By weight/points as a way of score calculation (Results Settings โ†’ Calculate the score). This option works for all question types except for the Checkbox and Custom (Banner) types.

1.2.7 Note text: Write down the additional information about the question that will appear under the answers.

Export and Import File Formats (Pro)

There's a possibility for you to export and import questions. For this, head to Questions. There are four file formats for exporting: Simple XLSX, CSV, XLSX, and JSON. You can download the examples for each file to find out their features.

Simple XLSX

As a simple solution, you can make use of a Simple XLSX file for importing or exporting questions. Contrary to the other files, a Simple XLSX file supports only Radio questions.

After clicking on the Import button, make sure you've put a tick in the tick box if you need to import a Simple XLSX file. In order to export or import a Simple XLSX file, your version of PHP must be over 5.6.

Simple XLSX file includes the following values.

  • Question: Here you need to write down your question.
  • Category: In this field, you need to set the question category.
  • Question explanation: In this field, you should give the explanation to your question.
  • Correct answers: Type the number of the correct answer.
  • Answer 1/Answer 2 (etc.): Write down the answers to each question.

An example of a Simple XLSX file: Download

CSV

A CSV file is a text file in which values are separated by commas.

  • Category: Set down the name of the question category in this field.
  • Question: In the given field, you just need to type in the question.
  • Question image: Provide the link to the question image if available.
  • Question hint: Insert a question hint just by adding the content.
  • Type: A CSV file supports all question types except for the Custom (Banner) type.
  • Published: This field accepts only two values: 1 or 0. These values stand for Published and Unpublished respectively.
  • Wrong answer text: Provide a message which will be shown in case of a wrong answer to the given question. If you leave the field blank, nothing will be shown.
  • Right answer text: Provide a message which will appear if the user answers to the given question correctly. If you leave the field blank, nothing will be displayed.
  • Explanation: Give the explanation to the question in this field.
  • User explanation: Enable or disable the user explanation option. Type in 'off' or 'on' based on your preference.
  • Not influence to score: Do the same thing for this option. If you want the question not to be included in the calculation of the score, type in 'on' in the field. Otherwise, type in 'off'.
  • Weight: It's required that you enter a value in the field. If you want to provide weight to the question, insert the value corresponding to the points provided. If not, just enter 0.
  • Answers: The answers to the question are inserted by the following principle: - Answers should be separated by double semicolons (;;). - Options of a single answer should be separated by double colons(::). - After the answer, put double colons, then type in 1 if that particular answer is the correct one, and 0 if it's not. - Then comes weight. Put double colons again and insert the weight, either 0 or any other numeric value. - Do the same for the image. In case there is no image inserted, pass on to the next component by adding 4 colons (::::). - Placeholder: If any, insert the placeholder and finish with double semicolons.
  • Options: This field includes secondary options, that may even be missing. For instance: Use HTML, Question limit text type, Minimum selection number and so on.
  • Question title: In this field, you need to write the Question title.

An example of a CSV file: Download

XLSX

All the fields correspond to the ones in a CSV file except for the Answers field. Insert the answers to the question by the following principle:

  • Firstly, put a { (curly brace). Insert a quotation mark ("), write down the word 'answer', then close it with a quotation mark.
  • Secondly, put a colon (:), insert quotation marks, and enter the first answer to the question between them.
  • Then comes a comma, after which you need to insert all the necessary information according to the sequence.

As you may notice, you need to provide both the name of the category (e.g. answer) and the data appropriate to it (the answer itself). The same goes for the image, the placeholder, etc. What refers to the ordering, insert 1 if the answer stands in the first place, 2 if is in the second, and so on.

It's also key to remember that you should necessarily provide weights, even if there are none. If this is the case, enter 0.

In order to export or import an XLSX file, your version of PHP must be over 5.6.

An example of an XLSX file: Download

JSON

There is also a chance to use a JSON file in order to export or import questions.

An example of a JSON file: Download

Export filters

In the Questions tab you can find Export button. Click at this button to set filters and export questions to CSV, XLSX, JSON or Simple XLSX formats. You can find four filters:

  • Authors: Set the author of the questions that you want to export.
  • Categories: Here you can set the category of the questions you want to export.
  • Start Date from: Set your preferred questions' start date of creation.
  • Start Date to: Set your preferred questions' end date of creation.
